In Focus with String Theory Guitars

At Spaceworks, we love celebrating the incredible businesses and organisations that call our community home. This month, we’re highlighting String Theory Guitars, Bristol’s very own guitar boutique based at The Old Co-op.

Meet the founder of String Theory, Tim.

How do you explain to people what you do?

“String Theory is a one-stop-shop for quality used guitars. We cater for all tastes from beginners, through to touring professionals, with a wide range of electric, bass and acoustic guitars in stock in my lovely studio, nestled in The Old Co-op. All guitars are serviced and set-up in the shop. Servicing and minor repairs are also offered at affordable rates.”

How did you get started?

“After many years as a secondary school teacher, the Covid pandemic hit and the supply teaching agency I was using refused to contribute the second round of furlough payments. I suddenly needed to make ends meet, so I sought solace in my passion for guitars.

Having played guitar for decades and being the owner of a good collection, I took a leap of faith into the world of self employment, and I’ve never looked back. The past five years have been some of the most rewarding of my life, with the business going from strength to strength.”

Why Spaceworks?

“Working with Spaceworks has been a game-changer for the business. I’m three years into my tenure at The Old Co-op and I can’t imagine working anywhere else. Matt and the team at the main site on Felix Road are friendly and conscientious, and Patrick the site manager at the Old Co-op runs things efficiently, frequently going the extra mile to help out logistically. The space itself is also accommodating, which is very important for a customer-facing business like mine.”

“Growth year on year has been wonderful to see. This year, to help a little with the workload and give a little back to the community, I’ve been able to offer work experience to local schools, including the efforts of the wonderful Iz (below)”

What Do You Want to Shout About?

“My business is rooted in the Bristol music scene in all its forms. From the budding musicians embarking on their first tentative steps into the world of guitar, to seasoned pros looking to add to the collection, and the local bands in need of a cable at the last minute for a gig. We sell, service, advise and repair. And in our small way, help to keep this vibrant city alive and kicking.”

From guitar servicing to giving local students their first taste of running a small business, String Theory Guitars is exactly the kind of enterprise that makes the Spaceworks community what it is. We’re lucky to have him at The Old Co-op.
